Description

Gréagach ab ea Aesóp. Rugadh é timpeall sé chéad bliain roimh Chríost. Daor ab ea é. Mhair sé le linn Sholóin, an tOllamh dlí ba mhó dá raibh ar Ghréagaigh. Insíodh sé na fabhail mar sholaoidí, chun comhairle a leasa a thabhairt do ríthe agus do chumhachtaí na haimsire sin. N’fheadar ach go mbeadh polaiteoirí ár linne in ann ceacht nó dhó a d’fhoghlaim uathu ar mhaithe leis an bpobal.

Tá na fabhail chéanna á n-insint ó shin anuas i dteangacha agus in urlabhraí an domhain.

Táthar á n-insint anseo arís i nGaeilge san aistriú¸hán a dhein an tAthair Peadar Ó Laoire (1839-1920) breis is céad bliain ó shin. Bhí an cnuasach sin a d’aistrigh sé ar na leabhair is túisce a chur sé le chéile. Níor sáraíodh é ar chruinneas ná ar bhinneas ná ar fhuinneamh na scéal.

Bhí ard-bhuíochas tuillte ag an nDochtúir Dómhnall Ó Mathgamhna (1872-1942) i dtaobh a fheabhas a dhein sé eagarthóireacht ar an leabhar seo. Oidhre ar an Athair Peadar ab ea an dochtúir sa mhéid gurb í Gaeilge an Athar Peadar a scríobhadh sé féin. Tá a théacs cóirithe as an nua anseo lena chur ar fáil do ghlúin nua léitheoirí idir óg agus aosta.

ranslations of Aesop’s fables, as translated by an tAthair Peadar Ó Laoire over 100 years ago. Now revised by Risteárd Mac Annraoi in this new and colourful edition published by Foilseacháin Ábhair Spioradálta.

Aesop was a Greek. He was born around 600 years before Christ. He was born a slave. He lived during the time of Solon, who was the most well-known of the Greek professors of law. He would tell the fables as illustrations to support a message, to give good advice to kings and people in power at the time.

The same fables are being told for generations.
