Description

Ní beag í tábhacht an chnuasaigh ollmhóir logainmneacha seo, a rinneadh i nGleann Cholm Cille beagnach 50 bliain ó shin, ceann de na bailiúcháin is mó dár tháinig ó aon pharóiste – – beagnach 2,500 ainm. Is é a chuirtear ar fáil san fhoilseachán seo gné shárluachmhar d’oidhreacht phobal an Ghleanna a sholathróidh dóibh den chéad uair leagnacha scríofa d’an-mhórán ainmneacha arbh ar bhéalaibh na ndaoine amháin a bhí fáil orthu go dtí seo, agus de go leor eile atá ligthe i ndearmad ar fad le himeacht na seanghlúine. Chomh maith le bheith ina thaifead ar stair phobal an Ghleanna, sa mhéid is go ndéantar na logainmneacha a chiallú chomh maith sa saothar, is acmhainn luachmhar é do na mílte cuairteoir fosta a bhíonn ag triall ar an áit gach bliain de bharr shaibhreas a chultúir agus a áilleachta gan samhail dá bhfuil an iliomad grianghraf gleoite le feiceáil sa leabhar.

Placenames are an incomparable and irreplaceable part of our heritage on account of the light they throw on the shape of the landscape and the history of human occupation. This major collection from Gleann Cholm Cille, some 2,500 names, each collected from oral memory, together with surviving historical sourcing, is published here for the first time. Each name appears in its authentic Irish form as collected from local informants, along with a definitive interpretation in English and full colour photographs of many of the locations. The resulting volume is not only a source of pride to the local community who preserved such an important and vanishing heritage, but will also be indispensible handbook on the region for the thousands of visitors each year.
