Description
Sample piece from Outward and Return
Gull
My call is lone and loud, raucous in command
my stabbing beak affrights all, by sea and land.
I can search and small things come my way,
bits of fish, crab legs, animalculae.
I can move on foot or, if needs be, escape
by running into the wind, head down, wings a cape.
My beak is orange-spotted for my young to knock,
release the food I pouch, digest for them a stock.
Where I have been, deep-webbed claw prints appear,
a chalky residue, white splattered as if in fear.
See me stand on one leg in harsh weather
losing heat more slowly, pale and richly feathered.
