Tá a fhios ag an saol gur bunaíodh Cumann Lúthchleas Gaeil i nDurlas Éile Co. Thiobraid Árann, sa bhliain 1884. Ach roimhe sin, bhí gá le han-chuid machnaimh, an-chuid dúthrachta, agus an-chuid saothair.
Bhí an t-am ann nach raibh meas ar chluichí na nGaeil. Bhí cluichí eile in uachtar – cruicéad, rugbaí, sacar – agus cúrsaí spóirt á riaradh ó Shasana gan aird ar mhuintir na hÉireann. Boic mhóra a bhí I gceannas, gan cead ag an ngnáthphobal a bheith páirteach go hiomlán. Agus an pheil is an iomáint féin, ní raibh rialacha cearta leagtha síos, ach ceantair éagsúla ag imirt ar a nós féin.
Everybody knows that the GAA was founded in Thurlas in County Tipperary in the year 1884. But before that a lot of earnest thought and a lot of work was necessary.
There was a time when there was no respect or status in Irish sport. Other sport were in the ascendency – like cricket, rugby, soccer and sport that was ruled from England without a thought for the people of Ireland. Important people were in charge and the general public had no permission to take much of a part. In football and hurling there were no proper rules laid down, every district played by their own rules.
