THE life and death of a north Belfast man shot dead by the British army has been captured in photographs in a new book published to mark the fiftieth anniversary of his death.

Daniel O’Hagan was killed in disputed circumstances in the New Lodge Road area in July 1970.

The 19-year-old’s killing came just weeks after the Falls Curfew and Battle of St Matthew’s and was seen by many as a further deterioration in relations between the British army and nationalists.

The day after his funeral, 1000 woman marched to a British army base in protest.

At his inquest a British soldier claimed he had seen the teenager throwing a petrol bomb while a civilian witness said he did not have a petrol bomb in his hand and she had not seen him throwing one.
