Description

A new booklet examining the impact of the British army’s Parachute Regiment in Belfast is set to be launched today.

‘The impact of the Parachute Regiment in Belfast 1970-1973’ draws on existing records and the soldiers own accounts of their time in Belfast.

Published by the Pat Finucane Centre, the document reveals that during the three-year period 28 people were killed by the regiment in the city.

They regiment was involved in the Ballymurphy Massacre, which saw 11 Catholics, including a priest, shot dead over a three period in August 1971.

More than 600 British soldiers were killed during the Troubles with the Parachute Regiment losing 56 – second only to the Royal Artillery.

Booklet author Michéal Smith said: “This document stands as evidence of the appalling record of the Parachute Regiment in Belfast.”
